ABOUT GUAM: Under the Guam Organic Act of 1950, Guam was established as an “unincorporated organized territory” of the United States. The Act provided for the structure of the island's civilian government and granted the people U.S. citizenship. Guam is a U.S. Territory within the Asia-Pacific region. It is 3,000 miles southwest of Hawaii. While the local Chamorro (indigenous inhabitants) people like to say their island is: “Where America’s Day Begins”, the U.S. government calls it: “the nation’s first line of defense”. Guam offers the U.S. military a prime strategic location with ready access throughout the Pacific. Guam lies between 13.2°N and 13.7°N and between 144.6°E and 145.0°E, and has an area of 209 sq. miles (541 km²), making it the 32nd largest island in the United States.

Guam is the southernmost island in the Mariana island chain and is the largest island in Micronesia. The island of Guam is 30 miles (48 km) long and 4 mi (6 km) to 12 mi (19 km) wide. Because of its close proximity to the associated states under the COMPACT OF FREE ASSOCIATION (COFA) between the United States, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau, it has the largest impact of all U.S. Territories under this agreement. This agreement accorded the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau a political status of "free association" with the United States. The Compact give citizens of these island nations generally no restrictions to reside in the United States (also its territories). Under the COFA relationship, the United States provides guaranteed financial assistance over a 15-year period administered through the Office of Defense Affairs in exchange for certain defense rights.
